My Favorite Hikes & Walking Paths Near the Yurt.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably packing your satchel, dusting off your hiking boots (or barefoot shoes, no judgment here), and gearing up for a stay at the Magical Yurt in the Woods. First of all — bless your sweet soul for choosing this sliver of the world. She's a good one.
Now, when you’re not soaking in forest silence, making tea by the fire, or stargazing until your heart cracks open in joy — you might get the itch to wander. And lucky for you, this land is laced with trails that are a gentle amble away.
I’ve put together my five favorite hikes within walking distance from the Yurt. Take what you need, leave only footprints, and if the trail gives you a pinecone, say thank you.
Big View Trail (Wolf Hill)
Distance from yurt: About 1 mile
Vibe: Short, sweet, and oh-so-scenic
This is the one I take when I want a moment of "wow, we’re tiny!” The Big View lookout shows off the Connecticut River Valley in all her glory. You’ve got two ways up: the woodland path if you’re feeling like a forest sprite, or the woods road if your knees are feeling nostalgic. Click here for more info.
Bradley Sanctuary Trails
Distance from yurt: Just under 2 miles
Vibe: Whispers of water and old pine wisdom
This place is true peace in trail form. Nichols Brook babbles like a happy camper, and there’s stonework tucked in along the path that makes me think of forest gnomes with a knack for landscaping. Easy, looped trails — perfect for meditation walks. Click here for more information.
Horse Mountain Conservation Area
Distance from yurt: About 3 miles
Vibe: A little rugged, a lot of magic
The Habitat Trail takes you over rocky slopes, past bear-clawed beeches (yes, real bears, but don’t worry — they’re polite), and through swampy edges that feel ancient and alive. This hike is for when you want to feel it. Click here for more info.
Petticoat Hill
Distance from yurt: 4 miles if you count the wandering
Vibe: Mama Earth showing off her jewelry
Take a walk through a hardwood forest that feels like stepping back in time. Old cellar holes and stone walls remind us that we’re just passing through, and that's a humbling gift. My recommendation is to go slow, touch the trees, and thank them. Click here for more info.
Historic Dam Trail
Distance from yurt: About 5 miles
Vibe: Quiet history with a healing breeze
Now here's a suggestion that is like a meander through a memory. The Mill River flood of 1874 reshaped this valley, and this path honors that past. A gentle, respectful trail that pairs well with a thermos of chamomile and a few quiet thoughts. Click here more info.
A Few Trail Tips
Bring water!
Take your time. The forest doesn’t rush, and neither should we.
Sing if the spirit moves you. The trees love a serenade!
The best trail markers are your senses. If it smells like moss and mystery, you’re probably headed the right way.
I hope these trails fill your spirit like they’ve filled mine. May your boots be light, your breath deep, and your heart wide open to the wonder all around you.
With love,
Carolyn Shakti
